Descrizione

The project proposes to re-think the conservation and enhancement of the industrial heritage in an innovative sustainable key considering both the threats and opportunities raised by the new energy transition process. Moreover, new “development challenges” related to energy transition and connected to restructuring economy policies represent a significant risk for industrial heritage. Hence, the project aims to develop sustainable strategies of reuse taking into account the energy transition requests, social and economic aspects and conservation issues concerning different associated tangible and intangible values.
An interdisciplinary methodological approach focused on the reuse of the existing production sites is defined: it relies on interpreting simultaneously, unifying and overlapping several disciplinary perspectives and different scales of analyses. It represents the starting point to understanding how the previous historic energetic transitions and industrialisation/deindustrialisation processes impacted the Italian territories, which are its tangible and intangible manifestations and their current status in the matter of industrial heritage acknowledgement and enhancement, e.g., listed production sites and landscapes, state of decay and abandonment, rehabilitation project, reuse.
In the first phase, bringing together the know-how from disciplines involved (e.g., cultural heritage, landscape, territorial governance, economic history and evaluation), the project will investigate the production landscapes of Lombardy, Sardinia, and Calabria. Activities will be dedicated to digital mapping (GIS) and photographic recording of industrial heritage to provide the base of an open-access data bank dedicated to the multi-level reading of these production landscapes. This virtual dossier will provide a visual and descriptive narrative of all transitions to push forward the research on the effects of the ongoing transition process on our territories, industrial heritage, and communities. Integrating expertise, tools, and skills will define a theoretical interpretative model that relies on a compelling correlation of inputs and evaluations, including sociocultural, environmental, economic, and conservation issues. It will be compared and implemented in workshop activities aimed to propose new production functions for selected sites (one for each regional context), creating communication bridges and collaborations with the local community; national, regional, and local stakeholders directly impacted by the new energy transition process and by future industrial heritage reuse.
Finally, collecting all inputs acquired from previous knowledge, interpretative and compared phases will establish a set of guidelines usable for future project activities. It will address the academic community and gather all the projects’ data and results analysed and re-elaborated on the base of the main approached themes in printed and open-access versions.
