The current situation of graduate programmes in Italy exploring the discipline of Architectural Conservation is highly articulated.
The most relevant number of graduate programmes offering courses in Restoration are found in Architecture courses. They are available either as part of more traditional single cycle courses (LM-4 CU) or numerous courses structured as 3+2 year courses (L-17 + LM-4); other courses include programmes in Building Engineering-Architecture (also under the LM-4 CU). There are also three-year programmes in Civil Engineering and Building Systems L-23, the most recent single cycle programmes in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage (LMR 02 – for Restorers) and analogous two-year courses (LM‐11), for the most part offered in former Science Faculties based on a philosophy that had already produced three-year L-43 courses in Diagnostics and Conservation of Cultural Heritage; courses that often include lessons in Architectural Restoration.
The disciplines of restoration exist in many forms and under various titles: from the most traditional, such as Theories and History of Restoration and Laboratories in the Restoration of Monuments (or Architecture), to more modern examples, such as Foundations of Conservation of Historical Constructions, Culture and History of Heritage, Diagnostics, etc… to many Laboratories integrated with complementary disciplines, in some cases also listed as Ateliers.
The presence and distribution of these courses across Italy is both considerable and capillary.
Visitors can access an interactive map to visualise all locations offering courses in Architecture (single cycle and 3+2) and Building Engineering-Architecture in Italy for the academic year 2020-21, all with relative links.
This survey is the result of the progressive efforts of the Work Committee on questions of education coordinated, until 2020, initially by Renata Prescia and Emanuele Romeo, and successively by Maria Grazia Ercolino and Michele Zampilli.
